Living naturally is about trusting God and the amazing natural healing system He gave us when He created our bodies. Unfortunately we live in a pill popping society because we’ve lost touch with what it truly means to be healthy. In this post you’ll get 15 tips for living naturally for better physical, mental and spiritual health.

My journey to living naturally healthy began with this quote:

“Your bodies ability to heal is greater than anyone has permitted you to believe.”

When I discovered that, I let go of the belief that I needed a pill for every ill. I realized that the pills were only suppressing symptoms and if you truly want to be healthy you need to figure out the root cause.

I started paying more attention to my body and how I was feeling. Slowly I began to recognize how my daily habits affect the way I feel. I discovered that if you want your body to perform and function at it’s greatest ability, then you need to give it more of what it needs and less of the things that interfere with its natural processes and weaken the immune system.

In my personal experience and in talking/working with moms I’ve realized that often our focus and attention goes into meeting the needs of our kids and everyone around us first. Because of that we struggle to fit our own needs into our daily routine. And that’s the problem. This leads to a cycle of stress, anxiety and a body that is prone to illness.

Living Naturally Tip #1: Eat proper nutrition

If you want to have better health with more energy and peace of mind then eat three balanced meals every day. Each should include powerful protein, healthy fat, and colorful carbs.

That means you need to figure out how you’re going to have time to fit breakfast into your already crazy mornings. Consider the impact on your mental health if you don’t eat breakfast. Maybe now’s a good time to try a smoothie recipe book or a freezer meal plan. You can do it!

Living Naturally Tip #2: Exercise Daily

As humans we are all designed to move! Movement is not only a requirement for life but also a requirement living naturally healthy. Think you don’t have time? Research shows that in as little as 15 minutes of daily exercise is enough to improve your heart, lungs, and brain. Additionally, it helps you manage stress and significantly boosts your feel-good hormones.

It doesn’t have to be strenuous, you can walk, do yoga or try some gentle stretching in the morning. While finding a gym with a supportive community is priceless, a gym membership isn’t necessary. There are plenty of free videos on YouTube for many fitness levels, and workouts ranging from 15 minutes to an hour to get you started.

Pick something you enjoy or try something new. Making it part of your daily routine is sure to jump start you into a healthier lifestyle. An added bonus is that regular exercise leads to better sleep and it makes it much easier to eat healthy food and drink more water.

Living Naturally Tip #3: Get Proper Sleep

Did you know that a lack of sleep can actually be bad for your brain? It’s true!

Getting enough sleep is critical for physical health, memory function, mood regulation and general happiness. Most adults need between seven and nine hours each night to maintain optimal health.

Frank Lipman MD. author of Better Sleep Better You writes, “If you are trying to solve a health related problem, but you are not addressing sleep, then you are swimming against the current.”

If you want to have more energy and be more productive through out your day, and if good health is important to you then prioritize getting a good night’s rest.

Living Naturally Tip #4: Drink More Water

A lot of people aren’t drinking enough water and it is affecting their mental and physical health.

It’s recommended we drink half our weight in ounces of water everyday. So, for example if you weigh 150lbs, you should be drinking about 75 oz. of water a day, which is about nine cups.

If you’re not a water drinker it might be time to switch things up. You can start by adding fresh lemons or limes, cucumber slices, mint leaves or even raspberries to your water bottles. Using a water bottle with time markers will make it easier to reach your daily goal.

Living Naturally Tip #5: Detox Your Body

Detoxifying your body is key to improving your overall health. I’m not talking about celebrity detoxes, or juice fasting. I’m talking about supporting your body’s natural detoxification process.

Our bodies are over burdened with chemical toxins due to our poor diets, environmental toxins and stress, so it’s likely that it needs a little extra help.

How to do it:

  • Eat fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants, nutrients, and phytonutrients.
  • Eliminate or cut back on caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods.
  • Reduce the amount of added sugars in your diet (even artificial sweeteners can affect detoxification).
  • Drink at least 2-3 liters of water per day. Adding lemon and/or lime aids in the detoxification. Adding other fresh fruits to will add flavor without adding too many calories.
  • Daily exercise and deep breathing can also help to eliminate toxins.
  • Detox your home from hidden toxins by switching everyday products, such as shampoo, makeup, soap, laundry detergent to a non-toxic alternatives.
  • Support your body’s main detoxification pathway with liver supporting herbs

Living Naturally Tip #6: Reduce Chemicals in Your Home

Reducing chemicals in your home is not only good for the environment, it will help to minimize or eliminate the negative effect of toxins in your body.

There are tons of toxic chemicals leaching into our bodies from our homes and it’s important that we limit exposure as much as possible. If you’re like I was you may not realize that many of the things that you have in your home and use daily can negatively impact your health.

Many chemical toxins are found in everyday products like household cleaners, perfumes, scented candles and personal care products. The Environmental Working Group has a data base of products that are rated for safety, it’s a great place to look up things you are currently using as well as help you find better alternatives if needed.

Living Naturally Tip #7: Use Natural Remedies

Using natural remedies can help to improve your mental and physical health without the side effects that many often experience with pharmaceuticals. There’s a reason why natural health is becoming increasingly more popular… Natural remedies are often just as effective or even more effective than conventional medicine.

Living Naturally Tip #8: Spend Time with People You Care About

Humans are social creatures, so spending quality time with friends & family is crucial to living a healthy life.

When you feel connected to other people, it’s easier to handle stress. One study showed that when you have strong social support, even when faced with major life stressors, you’re better able to manage them and recover from them quicker.

Activities such as: walking or hiking together, meeting for coffee or sharing a meal are great ways to spend time with family and friends.

Living Naturally Tip #9: Set Clear Boundaries

It’s a misconception that a busy mom has a lot on her plate, often the reality is that she’s overcommitted.

Moms always focus so much on being loving and giving that they forget their own limits. This often leads to increased stress, which affects the body in many ways, including negative impact on your mental health.

You have within your control the power to set Boundaries and say no when you need to. Think about what types of interactions drain your energy and then establish a plan to reduce or remove them. You can learn how to say “no” in a way that honors you and your relationship.

Living Naturally Tip #10: Take Time for Self Reflection

Taking time for self reflection helps you become more self aware. When you are self aware, you are better able to understand who you are and what makes you happy.

It’s also a great way to improve your mental health because it allows you to acknowledge how your thoughts, feelings, attitudes or beliefs impact your daily life.

Awareness brings understanding and understanding brings change. Just 15 minutes a day can help you connect to your inner self.

Living Naturally Tip #11: Pay Attention to Your Thoughts/Words

One way to improve your health is by changing your inner dialogue. Your mind is powerful. In the book, Mind Over Medicine, Dr. Rankin shows how thoughts, feelings, and beliefs can alter the body’s physiology.

Negative thoughts and words can affect both mental and physical health in damaging ways. In contrast, positive thoughts and words have been shown to flip on the bodies self-healing processes.

So the next time you catch yourself thinking or saying something negative, take notice of it and see if you can reframe it into a positive statement.

Living Naturally Tip #12: Get Outside in Nature Daily

As little as 15 minutes outdoors in the sun each day can benefit your health in many ways. Sunlight and fresh air has been shown to improve your overall health and wellness.

Also spending time in nature enjoying God’s creation is good for the body, mind, and spirit. It’s a another way to feel connected to our Mighty Creator, God.

Living Naturally Tip #13: Write in a Gratitude Journal Daily

Focusing on what we’re grateful for in our lives helps us to create a more positive outlook, rather then obsess over what’s missing or could be better. Writing down things you’re grateful for each day helps make the mind more aware of positive things in your life and it can improve sleep quality and boost mood.

Gratitude is a direct path to happiness. The more you focus on feeling grateful, the happier you will become.

Living Naturally Tip #14: Discover Your Purpose & Pursue It

Life is full of stress. You can lessen that stress by doing what you were meant to do, not just checking tasks off your list.

God has a plan for your life and it’s important to know Him as the one who empowers you. If we have an understanding of what He wants from us, then there is no doubt in our minds that His purpose can accomplish anything at all!

Living Naturally Tip #15: Pray & Read Scripture Daily

A 15-year study showed that people who prayed or meditated daily had half the rate of heart disease, high blood pressure and depression than those who didn’t.

Our Mighty Creator God knows what we need even before we ask. There is no better medication or cure than surrendering daily to God and living life With Him. Let Him be your guide. Take time to pray and read Scripture daily.
